WWE Summerslam 2018 Recap

Last night’s annual pay-per-view Summerslam saw Brock Lesnar defend his title against Roman Reigns, Alex Bliss defending the Raw Women’s Title against Ronda Rousey, and Seth Rollins competing for the Intercontinental Title agains Dolph Ziggler. Here is my recap for all you WWE fanatics.

Match of the night:

Dolph Ziggler defending his title against Seth Rollins opened the show. These men main evented Battleground just a month ago in a 30min Iron Man match. So to see them begin the show last night was a bit odd to me especially with Dean Ambrose back in the mix. This match started out slow with a ton of technically wrestling, but 10min in, they had the crowd on their feet. Near fall after near fall and with the outside distractions of Drew McIntyre and Dean Ambrose added to the drama. The high point of the match was the reverse suplex off the top rope that Seth Rollins reversed and hit Ziggler with a power slam. At the end, Seth Rollins kicked Dolph’s head off and ended him with a curb stomp.

Result: Seth Rollins wins the IC Title

Grade: A+

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe

Samoa Joe has flirted back and forth with high end programs ever since debuting on the WWE roster. He went up against the longest reigning WWE champion on Smackdown Live, AJ Styles. I personally enjoyed this feud because of how personal each superstar got. Joe introduced Styles’ family into the mix by implying he would end Aj’s career after the match. As the match went back and forth last night, as a bloody AJ laid on the ground, Joe grabbed the microphone and said ” don’t worry I will be your new daddy” to Aj’s wife and daughter. This ignited AJ to the point where he got disqualified for beating Joe with a steel chair.

Result: Samoa Joe wins via disqualification; AJ retains the WWE Championship

Grade: A

Ronda Rousey: The Next Roman Reigns

Ronda Rousey challenged the champion Alexa Bliss in a short battle. Alexa is a top 3 diva and was squashed last night in a match that I wouldn’t consider “wrestling”. She was forced to tap out to a vicious arm bar that actually looked like Alexa’s arm popped out of her socket (the only highlight of the match). All Rousey can do is bully her opponent in the corner, throw jabs as she screams, then tosses her opponent around. I understand she is new to the company, but I do not see her changing her style whatsoever. She is a UFC fighter and that is it. I wouldn’t expect a good ol’ DDT or superplex any time soon. Ronda Rousey is the next Roman Reigns are she can perform 3-5 “power moves” then finish the match.

Result: Ronda Rousey wins the Raw Women’s Title

Grade: C+

The Worst finish in Summerslam ‘history’:

Roman Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar. Roman was the favorite walking in at -250 (bet $250 to win $100). This was the worst finish of the night. Before the match started, Mr. Monster in the Bank Braun Stroman came to the ring and said he would cash in on whomever won the belt. As the bell rang, Roman hit multiple superman punches and spears and knocked down the Beast Incarnate. Brock kicked out of a count and dodged another spear in which Reigns dove outside of the ring and into Stroman. Brock existed the ring, gave an F5 to Braun, beat him with a steel chair, and tossed Reigns back in the ring. Reigns bounced off the rope as Brock was going to strike with the same chair and hit him with a final spear. 1,2,3…

Result: Roman Reigns becomes the new Universal Champion

Result: B+ (A if Brock won)

Best finish: Miz prevails

The Miz battled his old protege Daniel Bryan in a technically wrestling match featured with tons of submission holds and kicks to the chest. I was up in the air with this match on whom would come out on top, but as a Miz fan, I was cheering for the guy who just had his first child with ex-diva Maryse. Miz went to the aid of his wife as she sat front row, she handed him brass-knuckles, and Miz finished Bryan off with a punch to the face.

Result: Miz wins via pin

Top NBA Free Agents as of 8/8/18

NBA fans and season ticket holders, we received some news regarding the 2018-2019 schedule today. The five Christmas games have been announced along with MLK day games, and a few opening night match-ups. Lebron and the “new look” Lakers will be visiting Damian Lillard and company. The Boston Celtics will face off against the up and coming 76ers on October 16th, and Pat Connaughton and the Bucks will visit the New York Knickerbockers for the first Christmas Day game. Will any of the top free agents be playing for any of these teams on those days? Lets take a look..

Dwayne Wade:

The 36 year old three time NBA champion is unsure if he will step on an NBA court again. Those are the recent reports, but if you follow him on social media it seems like he is in prime shape and training almost everyday. That doesn’t mean his 65 year old knees can take the grit and grind of an 82 game season in which he hasn’t achieved in his entire career. The closest he has been was in 2008 when he suited up and played 79 games for the Miami Heat. I believe many teams could definitely use his leadership in the locker room and as a spark off the bench. He ended up leading the Heat in scoring in multiple games this past playoffs. With Dion Waiters returning from injury and a young back court including Tyler Johnson, Wade is still a great fit for the team he won championships for. The only other option would be if another team in China offered him a contract. The¬†Zhejiang Golden Bulls offered him a three year deal worth over $25 million last month, but he did not respond as the team gave him a three day deadline to make a decision. Bet on Wade signing a one year deal with the Miami Heat before the season starts.

Rodney Hood … For 3

On Sunday February 11, 2018, I was apart of one of the most important basketball games in Celtics history; Paul Pierce’s retirement game. The Celtics hosted the “new look” Cavs days after the trade deadline. The Celtics were blown out, I teared up as #34 was raised to the rafters, and the words¬† “Rodney Hood for 3” are now forever embedded in my mind from the announcer. Anyway…

Rodney Hood was a scoring machine averaging 17 points for the Utah Jazz before being shipped over to Cleveland. By the playoffs he was out of the rotation completely while refusing to check into the end of blow out games. This was bizarre to me considering he was the third best player on the roster behind Lebron James and Kevin Love. As Hood is a restricted free agent, the Cavaliers extended a qualifying offer of 3.3 million for next season. Hood and his representatives are looking for more of a long term deal. At 25 years old and the ability to create shots and play defense, I expected a deal worth around 60-70 million to already be on the table. Since the drama at the end of last season, Hood is looking like he will be receiving a deal similar to Marcus Smart. I predict he will suit up for the Cavs on a four year deal worth between 50-55 million.

Jamal Crawford:

A respected top ball handler who could go off for 20 points any given night is still a free agent? I guess the 38 year old vet isn’t as appealing as I thought, or maybe teams aren’t offering the right money, but his services could be used by various teams in the NBA. The first player in NBA history to win the 6th man of the year three times is a spark off the bench who can virtually create a shot at any given moment. He can cross up anyone and can be a great role model on a young team. I believe the 76ers or the Timberwolves make the most sense. About a week ago (queue Bobby Shmurda) the core of the 76ers including Ben Simmons loved the idea of bringing in Crawford via Twitter. To be honest, their bench is somewhat stacked if Fultz comes back with a jump shot after a miserable rookie season where he only played 14 games. We got to see flashes at the end of the season including a triple double. Anyway, one other team that might throw a veteran minimum offer to Jamal is the defending champion, Warriors. I believe Crawford has to much pride to join the super team, but at this point anything can happen. I see Crawford returning to the Wolves on a one year deal worth 3-5 million.

  2. Lucas Nogueira: Toronto Raptors

NBA Champion Rajon Rondo vs. Sophomore Lonzo Ball

This NBA off-season for the Los Angeles Lakers has made the most noise in recent memory. Back in 2012, the organization acquired aging Steve Nash and Dwight Howard to join Kobe Bryant known as the “super team” assembled a few years late. This was the last time anyone cared or believed the Lakers had any chance of being competitive and winning a championship. This formula did not work out so well as the team was swept in the first round of the playoffs by the San Antonio Spurs. Fast forward to 2018 and Magic Johnson, Jeanie Buss, and Rob Pelinka had the cap space to sign the best basketball player in the world to a four year, $154 million contract as in Lebron James. Along with James, the organization brought in Rajon Rondo, Lance Stevenson, Javale McGee, and Michael Beasley all on one year deals respectively. Rajon Rondo signing for the most at $9 million. Other than Lebron, the point guard battle between Lonzo and Rondo seems to be the most intriguing heading into this upcoming season within the organization.

Many would say, Lonzo is the clear cut favorite to win the job as he is entering his second season with the Lakers. As a rookie, he averaged 10.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game by only appearing in 52 games. Rondo played in 65 games and averaged 8.3 points, 4 rebounds, and 8.2 assists respectively in his 13th season. Rajon Rondo is an NBA champion and has one of the highest IQ’s in basketball. That may end the argument of who should win the starting role. Rondo has the ability to create plays and make his teammates better around him. Pairing his IQ with James at the same time could be a lethal combination on the court. Rondo is an unselfish, pass first point guard who could compliment James’ style of basketball real well. When he decides to play defense, he can help turn the ball over, look up, and feed a delicious dime to the greatest player on the planet. Lonzo also has the ability to help create shots for his new teammate. Lonzo struggled with his shot at times last season so passing the ball is the best option until he can prove his shot has improved and adjusted to the NBA style of play. Ultimately, both players can help The King in various, but similar ways.

The veteran Rondo is going to push Lonzo at practice. Believe it or not, I can argue they will become great teammates and friends outside of basketball. If I were Lonzo, I would pay attention and become the best protege possible to learn all the knowledge and advice that Rondo will provide throughout the season. Rajon Rondo is a competitor and will drive Lonzo to the starting position. Don’t get me wrong, things can change drastically if James can’t get along with the young core or if the impeccable father Lavar steps in the way. No matter what each player produces, “coach” Lebron will choose who the starting point guard will be night in and night out during the 2018-2019 NBA season.

Side note: The Boston Celtics will raise #9 into the rafters when one of the best passers in history hangs them up.
